Executive Function Coaching for Teens and Adults with ADHD and Autism

Living with Autism or ADHD can make everyday tasks feel more overwhelming than they should. From keeping track of appointments to balancing school/work deadlines or managing household responsibilities, executive function challenges impact nearly every aspect of life. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. As a neurodivergent coach who’s been there, I’m here to help you navigate these challenges and thrive in your own way.

What Are Executive Functions?

Executive functions are the brain’s management system. They’re the skills we use to plan, organize, prioritize, start, and complete tasks. For neurodivergent individuals, these functions don’t always operate smoothly, making everyday tasks feel much more demanding. Let’s break down some of the key executive functions and how they affect daily life:

  • Planning & Prioritizing
This is the ability to create a roadmap for getting things done and deciding what’s most important. If you struggle with this, you might find it difficult to break down large projects into manageable steps or decide which tasks to focus on first. As a result, you may feel paralyzed when faced with multiple tasks or looming deadlines.

  • Time Management
Estimating how long something will take or staying on track with time can be a significant challenge for people with ADHD and Autism. You might often find yourself underestimating or overestimating how long things take, leading to missed deadlines or rushing at the last minute. Time can feel slippery, either moving too quickly or stretching out, making it hard to stay in sync with the demands of daily life.

  • Task Initiation
This is the ability to get started on a task without unnecessary delay. Procrastination or difficulty getting started—even on things you want to do—can leave you feeling stuck. For those with ADHD or Autism, starting tasks can feel like pushing through an invisible barrier, even when you know exactly what needs to be done.

  • Organization
Keeping your physical space or digital workspace in order can feel overwhelming. If your desk, home, or computer is cluttered, it can make focusing and finding what you need difficult. A lack of organization can lead to wasted time and frustration as you search for misplaced items or important documents.

  • Working Memory
This is the ability to hold information in your mind while using it, such as remembering instructions or staying focused on a conversation. Struggling with working memory can make it hard to keep track of steps in a task, follow conversations, or remember what you were doing from one moment to the next.

  • Attention & Focus
Staying focused on a task, particularly when it’s repetitive or uninteresting, can be a major challenge for neurodivergent individuals. You might find that your mind frequently wanders, or that you hyperfocus on something for hours while other priorities fall to the wayside. This difficulty with shifting and sustaining attention can lead to unfinished projects, missed details, and a constant sense of being distracted or "scatterbrained."

  • Emotional Regulation
Managing emotions in response to situations, especially frustration or overwhelm, can be more challenging for neurodivergent people. Emotional regulation is tied to executive function, and difficulty in this area can lead to feeling easily frustrated, shut down, or distracted by strong emotions.

How Challenges with Executive Function Skills Affect Daily Life

Executive function difficulties don’t just impact work or school—they touch every area of life. You may feel exhausted from the constant effort it takes to stay on top of things while feeling like others are handling life with ease. Whether it’s keeping up with household chores, meeting social expectations, or managing the demands of school, work, or parenting, these struggles can leave you feeling like you’re always one step behind.

Without the right support, it’s easy to internalize these challenges as personal failures. But the truth is, there’s nothing wrong with your brain—it just works differently. And with the right strategies, tools, and guidance, you can take control of these challenges and begin to manage them in a way that works for you.
